Poertry Thursday - "Prose"

Being new to poetry this weeks theme made me actually have to look up what prose is compared to poetry. I'm not sure I understand it completely but I found one I liked alot by Michael Benedikt from Night Cries.

THE AWARDS OF WATER

At first it seemed as if it might just be the morning coffee again, boiling over on the stove again and overflowing from the percolator with its usual loud, scalding, scolding, disapproving hiss; but then after I ran into the kitchen I was relieved to see that the brown stain on the white porcelain had taken the form of a "splash"--which is to say it had taken the form of a circle with fringed edges, meaning that it was actually only just another form of water setting its seal of approval on solids. Do raindrops act any differently, I wondered as I turned down the flame--or do they too approve as they apply their pure, glueless, transparent stickers? Yes, I decided--even now as the morning coffee resumes its brewing, surely the dews are descending in all directions to award billions of blue ribbons of their own to everything firm; surely the sounds of rushing rivers flowing by are roars of applause for the solidity of terra firma; and surely the only reason why we do not regard the Oceans with all their thrashing waves as an unbearable daily threat, is that obviously they too closely resemble auditoriums full of crowds of people cheering and stamping feet....

The photo is from stock-xchng and to read other prose check out Poetry Thursday here

This is a terrific example of prose poetry - I'm still not sure if I like prose poetry, but this is great!

This is filled with lots of visuals, but my favorite line is right at the end with the waves like auditoriums with the crowds cheering--just reading this makes me experience it.

Thanks for a smile and "putting your watermark" on my day :D

Sounds like prose poetry to me--I like it. BTW, I loved reading your last four posts, especially love the black-and-white photo! I'm so glad Dave wasn't hurt in the accident!

Beautiful prose - I'm not completely certain of the definition myself, but this prose certainly sounds poetic and sounds to me like you picked a perfect example, I think - thanks for sharing it, Tammy! xo

Thanks for the example--I'm still not sure I understand the form.

Thanks for visiting my PT--also with a coffee theme.

I like that - kind of like the random thoughts we get while waiting for a kettle to boil, taken to its limit.

Tammy,
When the message is clear to you and touches your soul then what it's called is immaterial...It's the message/story that's important.
Good choice to share!

I like how you allow the poem to build slowly, so slowly, and that it culminates with all the oceans (within and without) is such a generous, joyful gesture. Splendid.

The writing I like best is always poetic. This is a wonderful choice.

I liked this very much, the analogy works.

All this while I was chuckling over "Splish Splash". You took me back to high school!

Boy this is really complex and brain frying. I would love to be able to create such a range of images and dynamics in such a short space of words.

I like prose poetry alright (this piece is nice). but I still can't put my finger on exactly what prose poetry is, and compared to other forms of writing. Cheers

Yes, this seems like a good example of prose poetry, but like rethabile i couldn't begin to define prose poetry and how if differs from normal prose...
