Sunday Scribbling - "Superstitions"
I'm not a big believer in superstitions but I do believe there are signs everywhere if you pay attention. I think we make our own luck with the choices we make in our lives.
On my wedding day we had a native Hawaiian singer serenading us on the beach. After our vows the singer pointed behind us saying "look, a double rainbow, this is a sign of good luck." We looked at it as a blessing on a very important day. Another couple in full wedding attire had left earlier due to a slight shower but I'm sure their day was just as wonderful.
I see signs in nature. Like a sunrise reminds me of a new beginning, the rain is cleansing and blooms speak to me of growth. If I was superstitious my mother's back would have been shattered into pieces with all the cracks I've stepped on.
I found a few superstitions I had never heard of so I thought I'd share a few.
Animals can talk at midnight on Christmas Eve
To cure a sty, rub it with a gold wedding band
An acorn at the window can keep lightning out of the house
It is unlucky to rock an empty rocking chair
Smell dandelions, wet the bed
Wearing an opal when it is not your birthstone is bad luck
A sailor wearing an earring cannot drown
After receiving a container of food, the container should never be returned empty
Tying a knot into a handkerchief wards off evil.
The spouse who goes to sleep first on the wedding day will be the first to die.

I love the story about your wedding day and the double rainbow!
I'd heard of some of the superstitions on the list you posted, but not all of them. I have to say, the list makes me glad I can't remember which of us fell asleep first on our wedding day, J or me! :-)
Many of these are familiar to me also. Glad the rain showers brought extra luck to you on your wedding day.

Hi Tammy! What a fun list of superstitions. I had heard of a few but not all of them. The sailor with an earring is so interesting! That's why pirates always had them! My mom was very superstitious and one thing we could never do was put new shoes on the table. Even today my husband tries to do that when we get new shoes. Even though I don't believe in the old superstitions it feels like I'm betraying my family in some way if I let him do it. I usually just move them when he's not looking!
I love the rainbow appearing in your wedding!
I've learn something new here about other peoples' superstitious beliefs.

That's so cool about the double rainbow! I get a little bit "superstitious" about them as I often seem to see one at auspicious moments!
The one about tha animals is one observed in our house! LOL! We have 3 dogs and a cat and the rest of the superstition is if you give them a gift, they won't talk about you! So, every year, who ever is in our house at midnight on Christmas Eve brings a gift for them. Can you say spoiled fur posse?
Ah yes, I was just saying yesterday in fact, that the opal is bad luck to this lovely woman. I wanted her necklace. (Anyway, it IS my birthstone)!

Double rainbows are a beautiful sight. I believe in psychic power but superstitions no. Signs and omens are there if we care to look for those..
I too see signs in nature rather than being superstitious. And I think the double rainbow fits perfectly.
Must remember to have a long chat with my cats on Christmas eve :)
It is interesting to read about the other, more unknown, superstitions. The one that I enjoy the most is the one about the wedding night, who falls asleep first dies first.

I feel the same way when I see certain things in nature, not always so much that they will bring me good luck, but I feel that it was a blessing that I was able witness them. I found some of the same wierd superstitions that you did. Some of them are really off the charts!

There was a huge, bright perfect double rainbow after a terrific storm last week. And then I had a great weekend... so your sign must be true :)

I love the double rainbow on your wedding. I also like the list of superstitions. Some were new to me.
fun superstitions; though I worry about people rubbing wedding rings in thier eye!!.... and i am enjoying the slide show while commenting.... (how cute is that baby in the tub!!! or that puppy in the snow... or that wedding photo by the ocean!!!

I've read the one about the animals talking at midnight (I remember trying to stay up to get my dog talk when I was a kid, lol :) and my grandma used to tell us that one about the opal (my sister's birthstone, and why I couldn't borrow her necklace, lol) - but the others are all new to me. Thank you so much for posting this valuable information! I have been searching the internet for clues as to whether seeing two rainbows were good luck. Which I would like to believe they are.
Yesterday, St. Patrick's Day (March 17 2008) I saw two rainbows in the sky. I found it odd considering we haven't had any percipitation in a few days. I found it to be quite ironic that there would be two on St. Patrick's day. The luck of the Irish and the Pot of Gold at the end of the rainbow!! And I'm Irish so there's gotta be luck there somewhere!
I would like to hear if anyone can confirm that this indeed is very lucky! I know that I could certainly use the luck!!
